I AM currently in training for a sponsored horse ride across Iceland, along with 29 other impulsive individuals from all over the country, for the British Horse Society's Icelandic Challenge 2002.

This comprises a week long trek across the wilds of Iceland, while herding approximately 60 Icelandic horses -- in addition to the ones being ridden.

However, I have to raise £1,800 in sponsorship to take part. All monies raised will go to the British Horse Society's Welfare and Rescue Centre, a project that rescues and rehabilitates horses from cruelty.

Although only small, the Icelandic horses can carry up to 22 stones in weight. They are unique in that in addition to the normal gaits -- that is walk, trot and canter -- they have an extra 'gear' called a tolt.

We will spend about seven hours a day in the saddle, riding two or three different horses every day. Our nights will be spent under canvas and we will be treated to traditional Icelandic food whatever that is!

I am the only rider from Lancashire taking part in the challenge and hope people help me to raise the money I need. If people can help they can call me on 01772 735237.

Mrs Sarah Webster, Ashton-on-Ribble, Preston.
