THE Citizen of May 16 carried a letter from a Mrs R Latham from British Columbia, in Canada, under the heading of 'Fond memories, famous names'.
She recalled that one famous local person was Eddie Calvert who lived in Fairsnape Road, Ribbleton, and played the trumpet.
In fact, Eddie Calvert was much more than that -- he was known everywhere as "The Man with the Golden Trumpet".
His rendition of 'Oh Mein Papa' was a number one hit for nine weeks, starting on January 9, 1954, and was the first UK number one hit recorded at the Abbey Road studios.
With the Queen's imminent royal visit to Preston, the chance might be found for a fanfare of trumpets to welcome her with the tune 'Oh Mein Papa' - as she became Queen on the death of her beloved papa - King George VI.
The year 1954 may be a long time ago -- it is the same year as 'Preston's flying plumber, the peerless Tom Finney', (as the national press often called him at the time) appeared in a Wembley Cup Final with Preston North End.
Like Sir Tom, Eddie Calvert is also a legend who will forever be linked to Preston, for a whole generation of local citizens.
Indeed for decades after, whenever the buskers in Fishergate played 'Oh Mein Papa' passers-by would nostalgically stop to listen.
