POLICE are hunting a man after two eight-year-old girls were indecently assaulted in a Blackburn park.

The girls were in the play area of Corporation Park on Wednesday when the man approached and indecently assaulted them. They managed to run away.

Det Mussarat Khan, of Blackburn CID, said specially-trained officers were due to speak to girls at length.

She said: "This is a very serious incident and we are fully investigating the allegations of indecent assault. We need to catch this man before he commits a similar crime."

Closed-circuit TV cameras are installed at the park and police are trawling footage to see if the man has been caught on film.

The attacker was described as Asian in his late 20s to early 30s. He had short dark hair and was wearing a grey sweater, dark blue jeans and scruffy trainers.

The CCTV was installed after a spate of vandalism at the park, and police took to patrolling the area after yobs made it a virtual no-go area.

Earlier this year a blaze caused massive damage to the park's conservatory. The heat of the blaze was so fierce that more than 20 of the conservatory's windows cracked and plastic windows started to melt.

Blackburn with Darwen Council was awarded £2.25million last year to help return Corporation Park to its former glory.
