IS Blackpool becoming the speed camera capital of the country? I cannot believe how many have cropped up recently and some of them in very odd places, like the one on Church Street where traffic rarely moves at more than half the legal limit. They are ugly, they only slow people down for short distances and they don't tackle the real hazards on our roads like bad road surfaces, poor driving skills, fatigue and phoning your friend while changing the CD and shouting at the kids in the back of the car!
There is no doubt that speed is a factor in some accidents. The only way it wouldn't be is if we all remained stationary. I don't condone (inappropriate) speeding but the camera method is catching the wrong people and for very minor offences.
I realise the roads are busy nowadays but we must take into consideration that the speed limits were set in the Sixties when cars had comparatively poor braking systems. Whoever thought of speed cameras should get the "Best Business idea of the century award" for the money they raise.
