THERE was jubilation in the streets as the final whistle blew on England's win over arch-enemies Argentina in the World Cup.

Hundreds of fans were dancing and singing in the pubs and flowing out into Burnley town centre after the victory sealed by David Beckham's 44th minute penalty.

The win helped ease the pain of England's exit at the hands of Argentina at the last two World Cups.

There was a heavy police presence in Burnley town centre following last weekend's violence after the Sweden match, but the atmosphere was peaceful.

England fans at the Reedley Hallows pub in Barden Lane were among those celebrating the country's win in Sapporo.

Landlord Matt Wright said: "It's a great win, I always knew they could do it. We played really well, every player did their bit and we stand a great chance of going through to the next round now."

Mark Bury, 22, of Burnley added: "I had a dream that England would win by two goals to nil with David Beckham scoring the second goal from a free kick.

"I had a bet because of that and would have won £180, but I don't mind missing out on the money because we won and that's more important."

Expectation was high from the kick-off with fans willing England on to repeat the sort of performance they had produced in Munich when they bit the Germans 5-1 and the lion-hearted performance against the Argentinians in France 98 when they were unfortunate to lose on penalties.

The Mayor of Burnley Gordon Birtwistle said: "It was a great win and we must surely qualify for the second round. I was very impressed with the whole team performance. Well done England."

Richard Papon, landlord of the the Derby Arms, Colne, was kept busy as football fans packed his pub for the match.

He said: "It was absolutely heaving. We all got very drunk and very happy. It was a good win and there was a huge cheer when England scored.

"I wouldn't be surprised if it was heard right across Colne. Everyone was in really good spirits."

In Rossendale, fans flocked to the Royal Hotel, Waterfoot, and its newly-opened Cellar Sport and Music Bar was packed with people cheering England to victory.

Judith Stannard, wife of co-owner Paul Stannard, said: "It has been really good and downstairs was jam packed.

"There must have been 300 in the cellar and even more in the pub.

"When England, scored the atmosphere was electric. They shouted so loudly the building shook!"
