A SCHOOL yesterday launched what is believed to be the first 'walking bus' in East Lancashire to do its bit for the environment.

The aim of the 'walking bus', at Peel Park Primary School, Alice Street, Accrington, is to keep the children healthy and ease traffic congestion and pollution in the area.

More than 15 youngsters, aged from four to 11, were joined by their parents, headteacher Hugh Burnkinshaw and Lancashire County Council's road safety adviser Chris Smith to launch the pilot scheme.

Youngsters were dropped off at various pickup points by their parents and walked to school wearing fluorescent tabards to make them more visible to motorists.

The first two left the town's Clarendon Street bus stop and St Anne's Church, Garfield Street, at 8.30am, picking up more children en route to arrive in time for lessons.

And the scheme was given the thumbs up by the pupils, some of whom are used to walking to school with relatives.

Jake Perry, seven, of Stanley Street, Accrington, said: "I have walked before with my grandma but this is better because my grandma has to go around the car park and it takes ages to park the car."

Hannah Whittaker, nine, from Lower Darwen, said: "My mum usually drops me off at my childminder's who takes me to school. It was all right today. I would rather walk."

Parent Julie Plummer, one of seven adults who accompanied the 17 children , said: "They were really good, all enthusiastic.

"This morning was the first time they have worn the jackets so that was fun for them. They behaved really well and stayed in their pairs. We didn't have to tell them anything."

The scheme was organised by a committee of four parents at the school, with plans starting last October.

Mr Burkinshaw said: "It's going to generate a lot of enthusiasm. People in cars were shouting encouragement this morning.

"I'm delighted with the way the parents have taken over the organisation."

The school has another two routes planned for September from Burnley Road and Whalley Road. Parents wishing to get involved should contact the school officer on 01254 231583.
