WARREN HEGG will lead Lancashire as a batsman, not a wicket keeper, for the first time in his career in the three-day game against Durham University which starts tomorrow.
The Red Rose skipper has declined the chance of joining Stuart Law, Peter Martin, Glen Chapple and Kyle Hogg in taking a break.
But he will ease his workload by handing the gloves to Jamie Haynes and captaining the team from the outfield.
Ryan Driver is called up for his first appearance of the season and Tim Roberts, Mike Smethurst and Chris Schofield are also given the chance to impress after recent spells in the seconds.
Roberts, Driver and Mark Chilton, who continues his opening partnership with Alec Swann, are all former members of the Durham University team coached by ex-Lancashire and England opener Graeme Fowler.
Neil Fairbrother and Graham Lloyd were picked for the second team game against Durham at Grappenhall for different reasons, although the first day was washed out yesterday.
"Grappenhall is Neil's home club and as this is the first time we have staged a home game in Cheshire, we thought it would be a nice gesture for him to play," explained manager Mike Watkinson.
"With Bumble, I thought Durham's second team seam attack would give him more of a test against pace than the university lads."
Lloyd has been struggling for runs in the Championship since starting the season with three consecutive half centuries.
Lancashire (v Durham University): Chilton, Swann, Haynes (wk), Hegg (capt), Roberts, Driver, Schofield, Wood, Keedy, Smethurst, Anderson.
SUSSEX captain Chris Adams has undergone knee surgery to repair damage done whilst training last month.
The former England batsman was injured during a net session, suffering a small cartilage tear.
He is expected to be out of action for a further two weeks.
Adams said: "It's been a very frustrating couple of weeks for me, especially as I was in good form prior to the accident."
Grappenhall is Neil Fairbrother's home club, we thought it would be nice for him to play
"But I will be back playing very shortly even more determined to make my mark."
