A 35-YEAR-OLD man has appeared before Blackburn magistrates charged in connection with a large scale disturbance in Darwen on Saturday following the defeat of Italy by Croatia in the World Cup.

Gary Hasson, of Duxbury Street, Darwen, is charged with violent disorder, assaulting Angelo Carnovale causing him grievous bodily harm and assaulting Enoch Vaiey causing him actual bodily harm.

The incident allegedly occurred in Church Terrace, Darwen, on Saturday evening near a house were Italian residents had held a World Cup party.

A group of children were playing football in the street and two women fought and were separated before the incident escalated.

At one time police had to form a protective cordon around a man to protect him from a crowd of more than 30 people.

Four other men were arrested and have been bailed to appear in court on Wednesday.

Hasson was remanded on bail until June 17 with conditions that he lives in Duxbury Street, does not go within 100 metres of Church Terrace and does not contact prosecution witnesses.
