EXTRA fund-raising events are to be put on in Darwen in a bid to make up a shortfall in charity funds after an annual gala was washed out.
In good years the Darwen Lions' Gala attracted 10,000 people to Blacksnape playing fields.
But Ian Ashton, one of the organisers, said of last weekend's 23rd annual event: "We wouldn't have had anyone there at all if it wasn't for the stall holders and schoolchildren in a running race and playing in a football match.
"It was disastrous, a total washout."
The Lions are left cursing their bad luck again after their annual two day event in Blackburn's Witton Park last August was also a washout.
Blackburn's financial flop meant the Darwen gala was scaled down this year. Organisers are now planning to stage extra events throughout the year to prevent further cutbacks next year.
Charities, which set up stalls at the gala, were also hit and were left without the annual boost to funds.
A funfair, outside shows, charity stalls, and demonstrations by the police, fire and army were scheduled to take place at the gala, but many were sent away by midday.
At 11am, local schoolchildren took part in a running race around the field, and half-an-hour later there was a special five-a-side football match.
"After the football match we tried to get the remaining attractions started but the rain came and then came some more," said Mr Ashton.
"A lot of preparation goes into any gala. There are many, many hours of hard work go into getting this sorted out, but people just didn't come. We are sorry that the charities which came didn't get the support.
"Hopefully the Blackburn Lions will make up for us."
He said that funds for two Christmas parties for children and pensioners in Darwen may have to be cancelled unless money can be raised from elsewhere.
"We are going to have to do something else to raise funds and we need people to support us," said Mr Ashton.
