A WOMAN from Rossendale rescued a dog from a busy road in Newchurch after it was abandoned by two men in a car.

Pam Brown was at her home, in Naze Court, in Newchurch, on Friday morning when she saw two men pull up in a small blue car outside her front window.

They took the dog off its lead leaving it by the roadside as they drove off.

The dog is a male, black and white border cross collie aged around six months old.

Pam said: "My lounge window looks out on the road and I was just about to start watching the football when the car pulled up.

"The passenger, who looked in his mid 20s, got out of the car and slipped off the lead.

"I thought he was being brave because it is a busy road. The dog sat on the grass verge and he started cleaning the back of the car inside so I thought the dog must have been sick or something. They then took off and left the dog.

"The dog realised they'd gone and started dashing backwards and fowards across the road. He was going to cause an accident so I went out and managed to entice him back in to my house.

"I said I would keep him over the weekend but I've got my own dog and it is only a small flat so the RSCPA are collecting him on Monday."

Rossedale dog warden David East said: "It makes me sick. I hope that someone comes forward and can tell me who these people are. They can ring me on 01706 244552 and leave a message on the answer phone. It will be treated in confidence and I am willing to give a small reward if I can find out who they are.

"I will do my upmost to prosecute them."
