A LOCAL woman, Mrs Barber, is gathering articles and photos for the Exhibition in Church which runs during the week of the Worsthorne Arts and Crafts.

The exhibition will celebrate 50 years of village life and sports and leisure in the area.

Photos, postcards, newspaper articles and other memorabilia about Pike Hill Farm, the old house at Pike Hill, Brownside Farm and Mill, Sewage Works and Heckenhurst Reservoir, shops in the square in the 1950s, and the Queen's coronation, are needed.

Because of the dangerous state of a retaining wall at Swindon Bridge, which is in danger of collapse, Lancashire County Council has temporarily closed the C658 Todmorden Road/Extwistle Road until midnight on June 25.

An alternative route for traffic is via C661 Brownside Road, C660 Red Lees Road, Ridge Avenue, Queens Park Road, A6114 Queen Victoria Road/Eastern Avenue, C662 Briercliffe Road/Burnley Road.

The local authority has assured residents that access to properties will be available at all times.

The Friends of Worsthorne with Hurstwood are currently organising the annual carnival to take place on the August 24.

Volunteers who will be available to help between noon and teatime would be appreciated. They are asked to contact Rob Mallett on 01282 838014.

Arrangements so far include carnival floats, a band, allotment holders competition, and cream teas provided by the Ladies Group.

The flower tubs outside the Reading Rooms have been re-planted with geraniums and begonias by the borough council. Everyone agrees that it is a colourful display.

Worsthorne Ladies Group will hold a Jubilee Jacobs Join Lunch in the Reading Rooms on Friday. Meet at 11am for lunch at 12noon. Everyone welcome.

The Ladies Group will have a three- week break for the summer holidays from Friday, June 28. The group will restart its meetings on Friday July 26.

The Tuesday Afternoon group meets from 1.30pm to 3.30pm. The cost is £1.20 but this includes afternoon tea, cards, dominoes, bingo, and other activities. New members would be made welcome.

The owners of 542 Brunshaw Road, Pike Hill, Burnley, have applied for planning permission to extend the kitchen.

Residents of 21 Townfield Avenue, Worsthorne, have applied to change a garage into a playroom with a toilet.

The plans also include extending the first floor to create another bedroom.
