ENGLAND have won the World Cup - twice! While a nation crosses its fingers in the hope that Sven and the boys in Japan and South Korea can qualify for the second round of the cup after the Nigeria game tomorrow, there are two sides, who call themselves England, who are already celebrating!
The Farley's World Cup Fives, played at Witton Park, was a huge success, with a massive 57 teams over four age groups taking part.
Each team took on the name of a World Cup country - and England won in the Under 11 Boys' and Senior Men's competitions.
Clitheroe Wolves A represented the national side in the Under 11 Boys, beating Spain - represented by Accoutre - in the final.
Neither side had conceded a goal in the whole contest up to the final - which was played on a very wet pitch - and Accoutre drew first blood, going 1-0 up.
But Clitheroe came back into it with a late goal from Adam Barton to send the game into extra time. Barton then scored again in extra time to clinch the win.
In the Senior Men's contest the Ewood Arms, representing England, beat Farley's Solicitors B, representing Uruguay, in the final.
They had lost the first game - ironically against Sweden - but went on to win every other match, knocked Italy out in the semi-final and then came from behind to take the title. After conceding early, Darwen's Dennis Hill equalised but the side soon fell behind again.
Hill again equalised and Gary Thomas popped up with the winner.
In the Girls Under 12s' competition Argentina were the victors.
Represented by Darwen Ladies A, the 'Argentinians' beat 'Brazilians' Bolton Wanderers Ladies A 5-1 in the final.
But it was the semi final - against Bury -that was the real thriller.
Two-nil down at half-time, Darwen pulled it back to 2-2, which was how it remained after extra time.
All three penalties for both sides were scored and it was down to sudden death - Katy Bell scoring the winning spot kick, the team's fifth altogether.
In the Under 13s Boys' contest Ireland - in the guise of Feniscowles Wolves - beat the Bengal Stars' Spain side to lift the title.
Feniscowles - who put out their Under 12 team - won 1-0 thanks to an own goal in the second half.
