TWO new wardens are set to take to the streets of Burnley town centre in a bid to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour.
The uniformed wardens will patrol the town and report on problems such as graffiti and litter as well as reporting crimes such as shoplifting to the police.
They will also be linked up to the community radio scheme which links town centre shops and the police in a bid to foil shoplifters.
The warden posts were made possible after Lancashire was identified as one of 10 crime hotspots across the country leading to an extra £22.5million of government cash from the Neighbourhood Renewal fund .
The two new wardens, Peter Ashworth and Helen Campbell, take over from the two Town Centre Guides who operated in the town centre until March when funding ran out.
Both will also staff the customer care point at Charter Walk Shopping Centre, which provided some of the funding along with the Home Office, for some of the week.
Ian Stackhouse, town centre manager, said: "Wardens will compliment the work already undertaken by bodies such as the police within the town centre with the aim of making the central area safer and a more pleasant experience and environment for everyone concerned."
