CHILDREN are being blamed for starting a fire which destroyed the roof of a house under renovation in Radcliffe.
Fire fighters from Bury and Whitefield raced to 32 Cross Lane at 6.20pm on Sunday (June 9) after neighbours raised the alarm.
The Housing Association property had only been vacated two weeks ago and builders had been carrying out work to upgrade the house.
Children had forced their way in through a window and had been using the building as a shelter for a number of days prior to the fire.
On Sunday, smoke was seen pouring from a rear window after a fire had been started in a back bedroom.
However, the biggest problem was a blaze in the airing cupboard which had spread to the roof.
Two crews of fire fighters tackled the blaze and the aerial ladder was brought in to help strip the fire-damaged roof in a two hour long operation.
Whitefield CID and forensic officers were later called in to investigate the fire.
