HIROAKI Morishima and Hidetoshi Nakata scored as Japan beat Tunisia, 2-0, and finished on top of Group H.
Japan will take on Turkey in the last 16 on June 18 at Miyagi. Group H foe Belgium finished second with a 3-2 win over Russia and play Brazil in the next round.
After a dull first half in which the teams attempted one shot apiece, Morishima scored after coming on as a substitute less than three minutes earlier.
Morishima picked his spot from 12 yards out following Takayuki Suzuki's pass.
Daisuke Ichikawa, another halftime substitute, nearly put the game away in the 53rd minute, hitting the left upright with a diving header.
But he managed to set up the second goal.
Off a cross from the right, Nakata secured the victory with 15 minutes left, finding the net with a diving header.
Tunisia showed very little initiative despite knowing they needed a two-goal victory to have any chance of advancing.
The African nation's best effort came with seven minutes to play, when substitute Ali Zitouni hit the crossbar.
Hatem Trabelsi was denied a legitimate penalty in the final minute of the first half, when he was brought down in the area by Kazuyuki Toda.
French referee Gilles Veissiere was very kind to the home side by not awarding the spot kick.
Japan maintained the perfect record of host countries, who have qualified for second round of every World Cup.
