ENGLAND fans roared into the quarter finals of the World Cup -- but it was agony for the Republic of Ireland.
Burnley town centre's streets were deserted as hundreds crowded into the pubs to watch the match on Saturday.
One of the most popular venues was The Big Window in Manchester Road which was packed with England fans enjoying the game on the big screen.
Among those revelling in England's performance were James Currey, 22, of Coal Clough Lane, who said: "That was a great performance, much better than in the games against Sweden and Nigeria. Bring on Brazil now, if we are going to win the World Cup we will have to play them at some stage so it might as well be now. We'll beat them 3-0."
Dominic Tracey, 30, of Cliviger, added: "That was brilliant, the whole team were class. I think we can beat Brazil and go all the way."
John Berry, 36, of St James Street, said: "An absolutely brilliant performance. We will beat Brazil 2-1 in the next game then Japan 2-1 in the semi-final and Germany 4-2 in the final in extra time."
There was a tear in Irish eyes after yesterday's penalty defeat by Spain.
Ireland fan Steve Lomax, 31, of Montague Street, said: "We played really well and showed what a great spirit we have in the team -- we should have won.
"I'm sad to be out, but it was a great adventure while it lasted."
David Foote, 27, of Crowther Street, added: "It was a great game and the Irish were very unlucky not to go through.
"I'm very proud of their performance."
