A COMMUNITY centre could be built in the heart of Westleigh -- if local people give plans the go ahead.
The proposed venue would be within Westleigh High School grounds but ownership and management would be the community's responsibility.
Facilities the centre would provide include a cafe, creche, music recording studios, small offices and medium and large spaces for meetings, performances and events.
This week, trustees of the proposed Community Centre will start distributing 13,000 questionnaires across the Westleigh area to gauge the level of public support.
Version
School children at XII Apostles, Newton West Park, Westleigh St Paul's, Westleigh Methodists and the Westleigh High will also complete their own version.
Westleigh High head John Pout said: "This is a proposal that the school and its governors are delighted to support. The building will be run by local people for local people. There is no genuine community venue in the Westleigh area and this centre would be brilliant for everyone who lives locally whether they be a baby, a young person, adult or a pensioner."
Completed questionnaires will be collected a few days after distribution and information will be collated for a a feasibility study. Funding for the project would come from Wigan Council's Urban Regeneration Plans.
