COLLEGES across East Lancashire are already preparing for the next academic year as youngsters finish their A-level exams. And they are offering prospective students pioneering foundation degree courses.
The foundation degree is a new qualification which can be studied full or part-time. What makes it different from other higher education courses is its mix of vocational and academic study, so that graduates are ready to make an immediate contribution in the workplace.
The course takes two years to complete full-time or up to five years part-time and afterwards students can study for a further year and gain an honours degree.
Study hours are as flexible as possible -- even on full-time courses -- and there is financial support for many students, including help towards childcare costs. In most cases tuition fees are paid by the local education authority.
From September, Blackburn College will offer four new foundation degrees -- Multimedia, Positive Practice with Children and Young People, Teaching and Learning Support (Primary) and Teaching and Learning Support (Secondary).
