HASLINGDEN pair Michael Opie and Roy Barnes won the Golden Jubilee bowls competition at Greenfields Memorial Gardens.

They fended off a spirited fightback from their final opponents Keith Boast and David Haworth, from Rossendale, to taske the title after a thrilling final.

After a day-long event, which began at 10am and didn't finish until 8.45pm, Barnes and Opie banked the win 21-12.

They steamed ahead 12-2 and were cruising when the opponents clicked into gear. But they could only make it to 12 and it wasn't enough.

Hundreds watched as the winners collected their Queen's Golden Jubilee trophy and every player - there were 62 in total - was awarded a medal, sponsored by the Community Chest, to commemorate the occasion.

"It was a marvelous day," said Bill Scott, chairman of the Friends of Greenfield who organised the event.

"The weather was the best yet this summer and one point there were people sart all around the edge of the green. Some were there all day.

"It was a tremendous day's bowling and I would like to thank everyone who came, friends and competitors because without them there wouldn't be a competition."
