HISTORY repeated itself when a side from Korea knocked Italy out of the World Cup today.
A Golden Goal from Jung Hwan Ahn settled the match to scenes of fantastic jubilation in Daejeon.
There were just three minutes left of extra-time when the goal came.
The co-hosts became the first Asian side to reach the last eight since their northern neighbours North Korea also beat Italy in Middlesbrough in 1966.
South Korea missed a golden opportunity to take a shock lead against Italy after missing a fourth minute penalty.
Then were made to suffer when Christian Vieri struck in the 18th minute with his fourth goal of the tournament to give Italy a half-time lead.
But they replied in cavalier fashion and their late, late equaliser by Ki-Hyeon Seol in the 88nd minute was richly deserved.
Then hitman Vieri inexplicably failed to convert a cross across goal with glory beckoning, slicing the ball wide of the post with his right foot.
Earlier, Turkey ended Japan's World Cup adventure with a 1-0 victory to line up a quarter-final clash with Senegal on Saturday lunchtime.
The winners then play the winners of the England-Brazil clash in the semi-final on Wednesday next week in Saitama (12.30pm).
Turkey, who qualified from Brazil's group and were only narrowly beaten 2-1 under controversial circumstances by the Samba kings were 80-1 to win the tournament before the competition started.
Senegal, whose opening day defeat of France set the tone for this fortnight of upsets so far, were listed at 150-1.
