A NELSON technology firm has scooped a government grant to further its innovative and employee-friendly business.

Elucid, a software solutions company for businesses which use computer technology, is based at the Innovation Centre, Brunswick Street, Nelson.

The company, which employs 15 people, was one of 21 technology firms nationwide selected as winners out of a record number of entries for Challenge Fund grants from the Department of Trade and Industry.

The fund pays for expensive consultancy advice to employers, such as Elucid, who want to introduce innovative and flexible working practices.

Eleanor Walsh, marketing analyst at the company, says that a flexible approach with employees is the future for successful businesses.

She said: "We are looking to be an employer of choice. We will do this by providing flexible employment with part-time and job share opportunities. For example if a project is finished on time and an employee needs the afternoon off we could offer that. There is more flexibility.

"In the near future we are expecting an increase in productivity and if we have content staff there will be more productivity. This means there is no high turnover of staff which reduces costs and we can continue to work with the staff we have got.

"We will therefore benefit greatly from the grant as it will help us improve our processes and improve our service to our customers."

Announcing the grants, Employment Relations Minister Alan Johnston said flexibility in the workplace helped recruitment and staff retention and reduced absenteeism.
