WHEN I was walking around Arnside last summer I saw a strange flickering light. A close look revealed that the light was being produced by female glow worms.
They produce light but not heat. It is an example of what scientists call bioluminescence. The females glow in order to attract a mate.
Normally glow worms are associated with the South of England but Arnside has had a little colony of its own for some years.
If global warming does affect us sooner rather than later then glow worms will become more common.
While you are waiting why not plan an evening visit to Arnside? Watching wildlife at night can be an unforgettable experience.
