UPCOMING West End shows can often be quickly swamped with demand, causing booking enquiries to end in disappointment amid a scarcity of tickets.
But apparently this does not yet apply to Bombay Dreams. It seems that Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber's homage to Bollywood has received a lukewarm response in some quarters.
Big editorial splashes and a massive publicity campaign are yet to pay dividends in terms of ticket sales for the lavish musical.
The much-anticipated Bombay Dreams finds its way to the Apollo Victoria in London on May 31 for almost three weeks of previews before officially opening on June 19.
But a good indicator of how well people will take to the musical will come in a few weeks when a single from the musical will be released. The song is an English version of popular Bollywood track Shak-A-Laka Baby and is out on June 24th.
Shakalaka Baby is taken from the Bombay Dreams album which is also realesed on June 17th. The album is produced by AR Rahman and Mario De Vries, the BAFTA award -winning producer of Moulin Rouge.
To date AR Rahman has composed over fifty Bollywood films, including the oscar nominated Lagaan and sold over 200 million albums, more than Madonna and Britney put together.
The musical, with choreography courtesy of Anthony Van Laast and Farah Khan, is essentially a love story set in Bombay.
Heading the cast will be Raza Jaffrey and Preeya Kalidas, along with former This Life star Ramon Tikaram and Raad Rawi.
