SPEED cameras are not the answer to speeders. I've lost count of the number of times I have been followed nose-to-tail down the hill at Witton Park, Blackburn, only to be overtaken as soon as I've passed the camera there and then found the cars which overtook me are stuck at the traffic lights just up the road.

Also, the speed restriction signs in the town are pathetic -- for example, those coming into Blackburn from junction 3 of the M65. And then there was the removal of the 40mph sign at Billinge without any warning that the limit has been reduced.

Cars still go at 40-plus down to the lights at Yew Tree. I have yet to see any measures to cut speeding from this point to the M6, with cars going at motorway speeds.

I have also yet to see a car going towards Ewood down Cravens Brow at under 30mph. And the only place on Livesey Branch Road where cars do 30mph is at the camera at Holly Tree.

So while these cameras may cut accidents where they are placed, from ten yards either side of them, it's business as usual.

Cars are going up and down Saunders Road with drivers thinking they are riding the Big One at Blackpool. If we are going to have a clamp down on speeders, let's have one -- not the occasional bobby earning a bit of overtime on a quiet weekend with a camera.
