NEWCHURCH WI were transported back to the days of music hall at their last meeting.
Speaker David Hill reminded members of the golden age of song which started in the music halls about 1830, though women were not allowed in until the 1850s.
On tape they heard old records of Alfie Bass, Stanley Holloway, The Great Vance, Tommy Trinder and from the 1860s Nellie Wallace and Marie Lloyd.
Dates for diaries include a WI Walk on June 27 to Appleton meeting at The Harrow at 9.45am and the garden party on July 17 at the home of Paddy Poulter. Tickets are 80p.
The next meeting is on July 10 when the speaker is Marie Dixon on "How to Handle a Woman".
