RIVALDO and Ronaldinho scored either side of half-time to tear apart England's dreams of World Cup success.

And despite being down to ten men for most of the second half Brazil held on to win 2-1 and advance to the World Cup semifinals.

Brazil will face either Senegal or Turkey on Wednesday at Saitama.

Engalnd got off to a great start after 23 minutes with a Michael Owen goal.

Brazilian defender Lucio failed to control his attempted interception of Emile Heskey's pass and it bounced right to Michael Owen, who waited until goalkeeper Marcos committed before finding the back of the net.

But the "Samba Boys" drew level in the third-minute of first-half stoppage time.

Rivaldo extended his goal-scoring streak at the 2002 World Cup, having found the net in each of his team's five matches.

The Barcelona striker slotted the ball just inside the left post off Ronaldinho's pass after he broke through the Engalnd defence.

Brazil then grabbed the lead five minutes after the interval.

Catching David Seaman off guard, Ronaldinho cleverly lofted a 32-yard free kick over the England goalkeeper and the ball fell just under the crossbar.

However, the match's complexion changed seven minutes later when Ronaldinho was issued a red card for a foul on Danny Mills.

Though the Brazilian midfielder thrust his studs into the England fullback's ankle, there have been worse fouls during the tournament that have not been punished with even a yellow card.

Despite having a man advantage for more than 33 minutes, England failed to record a shot on goal in the second half.

When the South American side won the World Cup in 1958, 1962 and 1970, Brazil either tied or beat England en route to lifting the trophy.
