COMMENTING on the current nuclear tension between India and Pakistan, Norma E. Wilson implies that Britain must take some responsibility for the situation (Yours Truly, June 6).

Perhaps it would be better if Ms Wilson directed her criticism at the governments of India and Pakistan.

Both of these impoverished countries pose as nuclear powers and maintain massive levels of conventional armaments and military personnel. Meanwhile, a good percentage of their population live with disease and squalor and without proper sanitation.

Perhaps Ms Wilson should reflect that the original members of the nuclear "club", Britain, the US and France, at least provide a decent standard of living and basic levels of health for their citizens.
