THE celebrations in London to mark the Golden Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II were beyond belief, with Great Britain once again demonstrating to the world our supremacy in staging such events.
The celebrations held in Ramsbottom, albeit on a somewhat smaller scale, were just as excellent and everyone involved deserves our thanks and the heartiest congratulations.
Throughout the weekend our town centre was awash with activity and bunting, with many of the shops being similarly attired in red, white and blue.
After the "Made in Ramsbottom" exhibition in the Civic Hall, we were tapping our feet to the brilliant Swing Band and on the Monday, despite the rain, hundreds of people poured into Nuttall Park for the splendid Country Show with its array of attractions.
The "Wartime Memories" event organised by East Lancashire Railway was great fun, especially the "Mock Battle" at Ramsbottom Station and the wartime concert which saw us singing our hearts out (and no doubt shedding the odd tear as memories of that troubled time came flooding back).
The skateboarding festival organised by Carol Crompton for younger people, and the duathlon, as well as a variety of events organised by Ramsbottom Sports Council as part of their Annual Sports week.
And if all that was not enough, England beat Argentina!
The really wonderful thing is that when all the bunting and the flags have been put away, and the events of these past weeks are but memories, Ramsbottom will have a permanent tribute to Her Majesty in the form of stained glass windows designed by local artist Bryan Farlow.
Once again, thanks are due to all who worked so very hard to stage these events and to the businesses which provided the very necessary support and finance. And thanks must also go to everyone who attended and took part and proved once again that Ramsbottom really is a great place to be.
