HIGHWAYS Agency engineers have appealed for an end to "bridge bashing" after it was announced that £507,000 is to be spent to replace the Elker Lane bridge over the A59 at Billington.
The bridge was demolished in September after being hit by an excavator on the back of a low loader -- a type of incident the Agency says cause delays as well as expense.
"Damaged bridges and sign gantries cause great inconvenience and delays to motorists not only at the time of the accident but also when repairs are carried out," said Agency bridge expert Paul Turner.
"We would appeal to truck drivers to take extra care when loading their vehicles to ensure they do not exceed height restrictions and that their loads are secure.
"Bridge bashers are a danger not only to themselves but also to other road users," he added.
Gregson Farm bridge over the A59 at Samlesbury had to be demolished after being struck by another excavator being carried on a low loader. The demolition work caused huge detours and delays for motorists travelling to and from East Lancashire.
