They may have had to cut the competition in half but it did not dampen the spirits of Ighten Leigh's annual five-a-side competition which is now in its fourth year.

Only 26 of the original 50 teams got to take part in the event after a downpour put the whole tournament in jepody -- with three age groups cancelled completely.

The under 11s age group was the only to survive on the Saturday with both the under nines and 10s postponed.

A total of 12 teams took part in two groups of six with the top two teams qualifying for the semi finals.

In the first semi final, Akzo Blue and Akzo Red met in an enthralling battle with the Darwen club rattling in a total of seven goals with the Blues running out 4-3 winners.

In the second semi final, it was a lot more cagey with Colne Clarets beating Kiddrow Dynamo with the only goal of the game.

Free-scoring Akzo proved to be too strong for Kiddrow in the final as they clinched glory with a 5-1 victory.

On Sunday, the under 13s age group event fell by the wayside as the under under 12s and 14s both survived the weather. Seven teams competed in both age groups in a mini league with the top four teams meeting in the semi finals.

In the under 13s, Borrowdale finished top of the table and took on Blue Star Blue in the first semi final and ran out 1-0 winners.

Second placed Blue Star Red played third placed Junior Clarets Whites and after a goalless match in normal time, Blue Star reached the final after winning 3-2 on penalties.

In the final, Borrowdale beat Blue Star 1-0.

The under 14s saw Feniscowles St Pauls beat Fulledge B 1-0 in the first semi final while Fulledge A reached the final after beating Readstone Yellow on penalties.

And Fulledge lifted the trophy with a 1-0 win over Feniscowles.
