HOPES for a one-off party in Accrington's outdoor market have been dashed after it was revealed that the insurance premiums would be too high.

The idea, which was the brainchild of new councillor David Myles, was reluctantly dropped in the wake of a message from Hyndburn Council's insurers that it would be difficult to find cover against the risks associated with the event.

Plans for the party next month had included the use of both outdoor market buildings to house a selection of local bands and DJs.

The two-day music event was set to be held the weekend before demolition crews moved in to knock down and clear the site.

A number of East Lancashire groups had already been signed for the ticket-only event scheduled for July 26 and 27 as well as a number of DJs. And organisers planned to have additional entertainment including a half-pipe skateboard ramp and the opportunity to decorate the buildings with spray-painted graffiti.

Coun Myles, the council's portfolio holder for leisure, said: "Naturally I'm disappointed that the event cannot take place as planned, but the insurers have their job to do and the message that they've come back with is that because of the condition of the site, public liability insurance would either be difficult to arrange or very costly.

"Since there would be public money involved I don't think it's appropriate to pursue a costly insurance policy for the event, and following the assessment that's been made I wouldn't wish to compromise on public safety."

Coun Myles, who represents Altham, now hopes some good will come from the venture and that a more regular event could be organised elsewhere.
