MORE than 2,000 women and girls ran through rain, gales and the pain barrier last night -- but they knew their discomfort could save a life.

They were taking part in the Cancer Research UK Race For Life at Witton Park, Blackburn.

The five-kilometre run, one of 70 held across the country, raised money for research into the cancers that affect women.

Since the first Race For Life was held eight years ago, more than £12million has been raised nationally, and it is hoped the Blackburn event will add about £90,000 to the coffers.

Many of the runners had been affected by cancer, either as sufferers or through family or friends.

Each wore a bib carrying their race number and a card -- marked poignantly either 'In Memory Of . . .' for a lost loved one or 'In Celebration Of . . .' for those who had survived cancer. The field included 70 pupils from Beardwood High School, Blackburn, who were hoping to raise £5,000

Anne Sweeney, Race For Life manager for the north of England, said: "It's a brilliant turnout -- particularly on a night like this."

The first runner past the finishing post was Jacqueline Moppet, of the Rossendale Triathlon Club, who was also competing to support Lancashire County Council Foster a Child campaign.
