BURY Young Player of the Year David Borley needs a hernia operation.
The talented 19-year-old midfielder who received rave notices after breaking into the first team last season will go under the knife on Monday.
But Borley will receive little sympathy from manager Andy Preece who is disappointed that the north-easterner didn't complain about the problem earlier in the summer, giving him time to recover for the new season.
"I'm a bit frustrated about the situation with David," he said.
"All the lads who had struggled through last year with injuries and niggles, David, Gareth Seddon, Jamie Stuart and Chris Billy, were worked solid for two or three weeks at the end of the season.
"That was the time they should and could have had operations but all of them, including David, came through okay.
"But two weeks ago all of a sudden he complains that his groins are troubling him again, I just wonder if he was totally okay at the end of the season.
"I wouldn't have minded if he had said he wasn't 100 per cent we could have sorted him out weeks ago.
"Now he's having an operation on the week we start back training, I don't think that's the way to approach it."
Although Borley should recover in time for the opening fixture at Oxford United on Saturday, August 10 he's likely to be an important few weeks behind his teammates in preparation for the big kick-off.
"It's a blow for David and the team as well," added Preece.
"He needs to think a bit more because he's a player who can go all the way to the top and this is going to be a massive season for him.
"But I won't tolerate this kind of thing this season. We all have to be pulling in the same direction with such a small squad because if we don't we are going to be struggling."
The first team squad report back in to Gigg Lane next Wednesday while the youth players are back in harness on Monday.
SHAKERS joint chairman John Smith and SOS chairman Neville Neville expect to hear from Sale Sharks RUFC boss Brian Kennedy this weekend regarding a groundshare deal with the rugby club.
As reported in the Bury Times earlier this week Kennedy has scotched rumours that he wants to takeover the Shakers but could still be interested in bringing his Zurich Premiership outfit to Gigg.
