A REVAMP for two minor roads in Elton is still streets away.

Back Bolton Road and Luton Street are used as a short cut onto Bolton Road by elderly pedestrians from the Fusiliers Court sheltered housing development.

They have been asking for potholed road surfaces to be upgraded for more than 20 years.

Residents in Bolton Road were consulted about adoption of the road, and asked to pay £827 each for an initial resurfacing. They refused and demanded that the council foot the whole bill.

The householders received support from Bury West Area Board, who also asked for the scheme to be given a higher priority by highways chiefs.

But at a meeting of the highways and traffic management advisory panel councillors rejected the request.

The scheme will remain fifth on the borough's list for road adoption, with no work set to take place for between three to five years.

Residents would then also be expected to contribute towards the cost.

Fusilier Court sheltered housing manager Wendy Irwin said: "I'm very disappointed about the outcome.

"A lot of the residents will be very upset and fed up, especially as the feeling at the area board was so positive.

"I don't think that they will give up without a fight."

Borough engineer Mr Mike Cannon said: "There were no overriding reasons for the request to replace others which have been waiting on the list.

"In the past there have been schemes where work has been carried out as part of a redevelopment or environmental improvement with funding from other agencies.

"However, where the council is funding its own share then there is an expectation for the residents to do so as well."
