A MAGNIFICENT match-winning knock of 137 not out from opener Gary Chadwick was the highlight of a great weekend for Greenmount.

Chadwick's career best total gave his side victory over Astley Bridge on Sunday at the end of a fine day's cricket.

On a wicket that was clearly a Godsend to the batsmen, the visitors ran up a terrific total of 257 for 4 from their 50 overs with Peter Stafford (78) and Tim Barry (75 not out) leading the way.

Not even a seventeen minute break while the home side's spinner Kevin Kirkpatrick had to be treated following a sickening hamstring injury could damage the concentration of the visiting batsmen who must have been pretty confident of victory at tea.

But they reckoned without "Chaddy" who cracked 17 fours and 3 sixes in his marathon stay at the crease.

John Ashworth helped himself to a useful 36 while professional Robin Morris and Nigel Franklyn both reached their twenties as the villagers reached their total for the loss of 7 wickets.

A day earlier it was the turn of paid man Morris to get the batting plaudits when Greenmount had a useful seven wicket triumph at Kearsley.

The young Indian allrounder hit a season's best 92 not out as his team successfully chased the Bolton side's total of 129, aided by an unbeaten 22 from Neil Earing .

Chief wicket taker earlier in the day was skipper Mark Stewart who did big damage with 5 for 37 while Morris and Mark Fallon picked up three wickets apiece.
