ON Saturday Bury Croquet Club's Souths Golf team had a home match against Pendle.

The morning doubles were a poor start, with only one win out of six games. In the afternoon things picked up a little, Malcolm Hardman winning three of his four games and Sheila Bruckshaw two, but the other two Bury players' best results were in the 'narrow defeat' category, so the visitors won by sixteen games to six.

On Sunday the Peelers visited Southport. David Barrett and Geoff Young were looking to a good start when David got in early, but he failed to get hoop one and the opponents with bisques then took control for some time.

David's one good break collapsed to son, while Geoff did not get off the mark for two hours. At the home pair were five hoops ahead.

On the other court, Ken Anderton and Barbara Young had little answer to a strong Southport pair, though still nearly level with half the time used.

The others then got going again and used their solitary bisque to peg out after about three hours.

In the singles, Ken's opponent was always in control. Ken got a good break when it was too late, as the home player was certain to peg out on his next run and duly did so.

David was in much better form than in his morning game, and pegged out with nearly an hour to go.

After a slow afternoon, Barbara had her best break in the Time turn, but ran out of points to score when still three behind.

Geoff had stuck in the last hoop when well ahead, giving his opponent a chance which was well seized, and a nervous period before a win at Time by six points. The match result was thus a defeat for Bury by two games to four.
