MY VITRIOL have always lived life in the fast lane. The band were signed to a record label after just seven gigs and their debut album was produced at breakneck speed.
But far from being delighted with their rapid progress, the band's high expectations meant that something had to give.
Indeed, frontman Som Wardner was openly critical of the album, pouring scorn on its failings, claiming that it had been too rushed and was far from being a finished product.
But the trio are now in a happier frame of mind as a re-mixed and re-worked version of Finelines is about to be released.
Wardner stands by his comments, which were made at the original launch.
"We're not into marketing or PR," he said. "We are apretty honest band and we say things as we see them.
"First time round, Finelines was never finished and we knew it.
"It was all rushed through.
"One day we mixed six or seven tracks, which was virtually half the album. I wasn't happy with those mixes but sometimes things happen like that."
When the American arm of their record label Epic stepped in, the group was given the breathing space to complete the project.
Finally satisfied with the American version, which is described as harder with a more raw feel, it was then all about finding a way to get the music back to the UK fans.
Som said: "We went back into the studio just to record the single -- Mood Swings -- because we'd got out of the habit of writing and I needed to get a load of stuff out of my system.
"I wrote it in an hour and then I had the brainwave to produce a double CD.
"I suggested the price of £10.99 and the label were really amazing and said "yes".
"We think it is a fair price for our existing fans and a great deal for new ones, who get almost our entire back catalogue in one go."
The second CD which comes with the remixed Finelines album is called Between the Lines and is packed with B-sides, rarities and some fine covers, including a version of Madonna's Oh Father, and shows new sides to the grunge-inspired outfit.
Finally happy with the band's first record, Som is now focusing on the future.
"I'm really proud of doing everything on the strength of the songs and now we'll be working on new tracks over the summer and during the next tour," said Som.
My Vitriol play Manchester University on Friday, July 12.
