AS a WRVS volunteer, I must reply to "Service Seeking Ratepayer" (Yours Truly, June 13).

The WRVS does not cook the Meals on Wheels, they only deliver them. In the past, it has not been possible for them to give this service on national holidays as the council-run kitchens were always closed. The kitchen staff need, and are entitled to, their holiday, just like everyone else.

Now, at a time when our social services are more hard-pressed for cash than ever, I am sure they would find it difficult to open up the kitchens, paying bank holiday rates. That is, of course, if the staff were even available to do this.

Nationally, the WRVS has been delivering Meals on Wheels probably before "SSR" was born, and are currently taking out nine million meals per year. These deliveries are made by kind volunteers of all ages, in all weathers and sometimes in very difficult circumstances. For your correspondent to say that they are not diligent is totally unacceptable.

K. PARKINSON,

volunteer and ratepayer.
