I MUST agree with the views of Salford Shaker (Your Letters, June 14) regarding the changing of the club badge. I am bewildered and disgusted that a century of history can be discarded as easily as one would throw out the weekly rubbish.
Having not missed a Bury home fixture since 1961, both my late husband and myself saw the club crest as a symbol not only of Bury Football Club but also of our town.
The Bury Metro coat-of-arms has, as far as I can tell, absolutely nothing to do with the town of Bury, let alone Bury FC. It is more reminiscent of the pseudo coats-of-arms used by those who aspire to be seen as something they are not. I cannot believe that this change would ever have been made by Bury fans for the good of the club.
What is next on the agenda, I wonder, a red home shirt perhaps, a change of name to "Bury United Football Club", or the once touted "Manchester North End"? Perhaps we should take a leaf out of Bayer Leverkusen's book and adopt the name of our sponsor. How about "Bury Metro Football Club"?
Change is all well and good, but change for the sake of change is a step in the wrong direction.
