A POPULAR Prestwich schoolgirl has died days after being injured in a hit-and-run accident.

Staff and fellow pupils of Prestwich Community High School are in mourning for 16-year-old Sarah Kobak who lost her fight for life at Hope Hospital on Monday evening (June 24).

She had been in intensive care following a fail-to-stop accident which occurred in Salford on Saturday, June 15.

Tragedy struck as Sarah was walking along Eccles New Road, near its junction with Langworthy Road, towards the Metrolink station.

As she crossed the road, the two friends who were with her looked on in horror as a green Honda Accord car collided with the girl. The vehicle was found abandoned nearby but the driver had disappeared.

Police are still hunting the driver of the car who has so far failed to come forward. Their investigations are continuing.

Meanwhile, pupils and teachers at Prestwich Community High School are trying to come to terms with Sarah's tragic death.

Mrs Lorraine Kearns, head of Year 11 at the school, said: "The school was shocked to hear of the tragic incident, and both staff and pupils have been extremely saddened by the news of her death.

"She was a lovely girl, very friendly and popular. She had a bubbly personality, with a beautiful smile to match, which lit up her face.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with her family."
