LEIGH RMI are celebrating after being included in next season's LDV Vans Trophy despite finishing outside of the Nationwide Conference top twelve writes Martyn Hindley
Tournament rules state that only sides occupying those positions can have the chance to take on sides from the Second and Third Divisions in the knockout competition starting in October.
But despite the Railwaymen finishing in 16th place, sides above them were not invited because of sub-standard stadium facilities, paving the way for Steve Waywell's side to enter via the back door.
When the first round draw is made in eight weeks time, RMI will be hoping for better luck than last year, when they drew a home tie with Scarborough rather than the Wigan Athletic or Stoke that they so desperately craved.
They muscled out 'Boro on a golden goal in front of only 325 spectators before being heavily beaten by Third Division Hull City.
A lengthy run in the competition this year could give them an unexpected cash bonus.
