REGARDING 'No urgency over untaxed vehicles' (Letters, June 26) I was intrigued by the response from an experienced police officer that "Unfortunately the police don't have the resources to employ officers just to report people for not having road tax."
Really? It is not so many months ago that the DVLA and the police were asking the public to report to them any vehicle being used without a tax disc. Why the sudden turn-around?
When your correspondent did inform both authorities on more than one occasion of untaxed vehicles, this public-spirited action was ignored.
If the police do not have the resources to report people for tax offences, why is it, that when we have speed cameras all around the area, we can observe police vehicles with a police officer on board obviously operating a speed camera to victimise some unfortunate driver travelling in excess of 35 mph?
It is also unfortunate that the police have resources for this underhand duty, but not for someone eroding tax.
I am quite perturbed that, due to many drivers being prosecuted for travelling just in excess of the speed limit, when information is required for some serious offence, the information may not be forthcoming quite readily -- unless the government and police services ease their almost victimising attitude towards drivers so that the motoring public will start having some respect for the law once again.
