THIS year's Soroptimist award is to be aimed at young people who have made a valuable contribution to their community.
The Young People Serving the Community Soroptimist Award 2002 will be presented to the young person who a panel of judges consider the most deserving at a ceremony to coincide with the International Day of Peace -- September 18.
Young people aged 14 to 25 who have been engaged in a volunteer activity, demonstrated initiative and personal commitment or made significant and noteworthy accomplishments as a volunteer, are eligible for nomination.
Lynn Dunning, president of Soroptimist International of Great Britain and Ireland said: "The future of the world lies in the hands of the young people of today. We want to recognise the valuable contribution that so many make to their local communities and to celebrate their work by dedicating our annual community award to them."
Gill Bowyer, president of the Leigh and District branch said: "I am sure that we have lots of deserving young people out there who fall into this category. We are looking forward to celebrating the success of their hard work. We are grateful to the Leigh Journal, Waterfield's Bakery and Sporting Lodge Inns -- The Greyhound Hotel who have kindly agreed to sponsor this award."
