LANCASHIRE were looking to the pace of Burnley's James Anderson to lift them out of their Championship slump at Leicester today.
The 19-year-old was recalled to the team for his second appearance as part of a five-pronged seam attack, with spinner Gary Keedy dropping out.
Skipper Warren Hegg named his team at lunchtime yesterday and then won the toss and put Leicestershire in.
But Anderson and the rest of the bowlers were then left kicking their heels in the Grace Road pavilion as heavy rain returned to wash out the whole of the first day.
Leicestershire included the off-spinner Carl Crowe to support a seam attack led by the veteran pair of Devon Malcolm and Phil DeFreitas.
And Aussie batsman Michael Bevan was back for his first appearance since going home on international duty last month.
As expected, Tim Roberts replaced Graham Lloyd in the Lancashire team with Ryan Driver retaining his place.
Even with Lancashire washed out, yesterday saw one of the most famous Red Rose cricketing names return to the game.
David Paynter, the 21-year-old great grandson of Lancashire legend Eddie, was called up for his Northamptonshire debut against Durham.
Paynter, whose middle name is Edward, is a right-hand batsman who has been playing for the Leeds and Bradford University team.
And he could be set for an early match against Lancashire if he retains his place for Sunday's National League match at Northampton.
LANCS: Chilton, Swann, Byas, Fairbrother, Driver, Roberts, Hegg, Chapple, Martin, Wood, Anderson.
