AN inquiry was under way today after a Burnley man was found hanged in a prison cell.
Convicted burglar James Michael Devers, 21, was discovered by fellow inmates at Liverpool Prison.
Paramedics were called to the scene but were unable to revive him.
It is believed he had made a noose from bedsheets.
Liverpool Prison, which is also known as Walton Prison, has launched an internal investigation and his family have been informed.
Merseyside Police are also to carry out an investigation into the death.
Devers, who was from Burnley but had no fixed address, was three months into a two year sentence after admitting burglary.
A prison service spokesman said: "We can confirm James Devers died at Liverpool prison on Thursday night.
"He was found hanging in his cell at 7pm. Paramedics were called to the scene but sadly he was dead at 7.45pm. He was serving a two year sentence for burglary .
"The coroner and police and next of kin have all been informed and there will be an internal prison service investigation and coroner's investigation in due course.
A spokesman for Merseyside Police added: "I can confirm a man was found deceased at Liverpool Prison, Hornby Road on Thursday.
"A police investigation is currently on-going."
Devers was sentenced to two years at Burnley Crown Court in April when the court heard he was arrested after falling through a loft ceiling of a house while carrying out a burglary.
The court heard he was so drunk he started fighting with the police and then gave a bizarre and "wholly improbable" explanation, blaming somebody else for the raid. Devers carried out the burglary not long after being released from an 18-month term of custody for burglary.
At the trial judge Barbara Watson said he had at least shown remorse for his behaviour.
