TWO people have been fined by Bury magistrates for abusing the benefits system.
Christine Hulme, aged 40, of Oak Lane, Whitefield, was found guilty of failing to notify the council of a change in circumstances. She received £1,438 in housing and council tax benefits while not declaring her husband's earnings.
Hulme has made arrangements to pay back the money. She was given a 12-month conditional discharge and ordered to pay £150 costs.
Wesley Lawrence, aged 23, of Birkinbrook Close, Whitefield, was found guilty in his absence of obtaining more than £1,000 to which he was not entitled.
The court heard he had continued to accept payment of his rent and council tax after starting work. It has since been repaid. Lawrence was fined £250 with £150 costs.
