A NEW community initiative dealing with race issues has been set up in Rossendale.
The Joint Action for Race Equality in Rossendale was established after a meeting by 25 members of Rossendale's Asian communities and an initial eight-member Steering Group was agreed.
High on their agenda is to offer a response to Rossendale Council's draft Race Equality Scheme which was submitted in May.
The group will also offer a response to the Audit Commission's draft report, the need for a rights advice service, and the East Lancashire Partnership Housing Renewal Programme.
The Steering Group will also be seeking meetings with the Council Leader and the two Rossendale MPs.
A spokesperson for the group says: "There has been no effective voice on race equality, drawing together all the various communities, since the Race Equality Council was closed down.
"The Borough Council and other agencies often do not know who to contact if they want to consult or give information. We hope that our group will make a significant contribution to good community relations in our district."
If you want to contact the Joint Action for Race Equality in Rossendale their address is: 16 The Valley Centre, Rawtenstall, Rossendale, BB4 7QG.
