CHILDREN could soon have special play areas in the city where they will be able to meet and play sport in safety.

Around half a dozen 'Rec Zones' could be created if the proposals get the nod from the council this week.

The special zones, to be situated at schools and community centres around the city, will give youngsters somewhere to meet, and complete freedom to do what they want.

If the plans are passed, they look set to be rolled out across Preston soon.

Caroline Jobbling, headteacher at Holme Slack Primary School, in Manor House Lane, one of the potential sites, said: "We're looking for a safe area for children to come and play.

"The kids like playing football, and lots of other sports.

"They'd like somewhere where they can go without people complaining or the police moving them on. Children deserve somewhere to play." The scheme, to be funded by government and lottery cash, will involve the creation of outdoor games areas with lighting where youngsters can play football, basketball and tennis, and ride their bikes.

The first three zones are likely to be in Avenham and Central wards, but eventually, Moor Nook, Brookfield, Tanterton, Larches and Ashton would also benefit.

Councillor Veronica Afrin, executive member for community and leisure at Preston City Council, said: "The young people need to find a place where they want to congregate. Quite often it's on a street corner, and they're seen as threatening by locals.

"The play areas won't take them too far away from the communities but will make sure they have an area that is theirs, more or less to do what they want."
