SHAKERS 'keeper Glyn Garner is set to step into Paddy Kenny's shoes and is fiercely determined to succeed.
Former Bury boss Neil Warnock's decision to take Kenny to Sheffield United on loan with a view to a permanent transfer has thrown the Welshman his big chance after two years waiting in the wings.
And although, like almost everyone, Garner was shocked at the speed of his team mate's departure he reckons the time is right for him to make the Shakers' goalkeeping jersey his personal property.
"It's taken a while, but I've always wanted to be number one at the club and I'll be working hard to make sure I succeed, have a good season and get us back into the Second Division at the first attempt," he said.
"I think all the players knew, sooner or later, Paddy would go, but it was still a surprise when we heard on Tuesday morning.
"Neil Warnock obviously knows Paddy's potential and it's a good move for him. He's not taken a gamble, it's an educated decision, he's a quality 'keeper.
"Paddy is probably the best goalkeeper I have seen in the Second Division the only thing left for him is to move higher and all the best to him at Sheffield United."
Garner, a former Welsh non-league international, was snapped up from League of Wales outfit Llanelli and has seen previous action with Cwmbran Town, Risca, Newport County and Caerleon.
He was blooded in several games last season when Kenny was forced out of the side and didn't let anyone down.
Boss Andy Preece has always had faith in the 22-year-old and reckons his performances in the reserves have helped keep Kenny on his toes in the first team.
"I've now got several friendly matches to build up an understanding with our defenders but after playing in the first team last season I'm sure that won't be a problem."
Shakers fans will wish the likeable Garner all the best and hope he follows in the footsteps of the club's previous 'keeper from the Principality - the legendary Neville Southall!
