DISABLED people across the borough will benefit from this year's Mayor's Charity.
Cllr Geoff Roberts, who is backing the local branch of the national charity Scope, has launched the annual appeal in a big way.
He has produced a leaflet explaining about his chosen charity which will wing its way to a host of groups and organisations.
Originally named Wigan and District Spastics Society, the group has been around since the mid 1960s and was formed to help people with cerebral palsy.
However Scope has extended its remit to help people with all types of disability.
Cllr Roberts said: "It may be called the Mayor's Charity but it is the people who make it a success by giving their time and energy to organise fund-raising events.
"People here love to champion a good cause and their generosity and enthusiasm are legendary. Together I know we can make a difference."
For Scope, chairman Debra Barlow, said: "I am sure the many residents who use our services will be extremely grateful to the mayor for getting behind a charity that has been helping local people for more than 30 years.
"We would like to thank in advance all the people who will be supporting the charity in the year ahead."
